Discover Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineers dream up creative, practical solutions and work with other smart, inspiring people to invent, design, and create things that matter – they turn ideas into reality in order to make our lives safer, more enjoyable, and more productive.

Why Biomedical Engineering?

Biomedical engineers harness their own creativity to shape the world of tomorrow.

Bioengineers work with cutting-edge technologies to tackle grand challenges that define the human experience. They advance human health, engineer better medicines, create the tools of innovation and scientific discovery, and harness the power of biological processes to aid our planet.

From the wheelchair that helps our grandparents stay mobile to the pain-relievers in our medicine cabinets to the x-ray that tells us whether we can play in the next big game, the products developed by bioengineers fit seamlessly into our everyday modern lives.

By designing solutions to problems at the interface of biology, medicine, and engineering, bioengineers harness their own creativity to shape the world of tomorrow. They have the vision to see the world beyond as it is today in order to create something new.

Some bioengineers design innovative tools and devices (such as prosthetics and imaging machines) to aid medical care, while others work to improve the processes of health care delivery (through new drug therapies, for example). Bioengineers also study signals generated by organs such as the heart and brain in order to understand how the body functions and how biological systems work. Many build artificial organs, limbs, and valves to replace failing tissues. Bioengineers are involved in rehabilitation by improving the designs of therapeutic devices to increase performance.

Bioengineers also design agricultural machinery, equipment, and processes to feed the hungry and ensure modern, sustainable agricultural practices. They develop solutions to environmental problems and help us fuel the world through innovations in industrial manufacturing/energy.

Whether designing and evaluating new technologies, developing new methods of patient care, studying biological processes, or tackling grand challenges in agriculture and the environment, bioengineers are focused on improving the quality of people’s lives and the health of our planet.
